The Sturgeon's Diet...
The Sturgeon is an active bottom feeder. Its main method of feeding is to graze the bottom of the river or ocean with its hose shaped mouth extended to suck in all objects that lie in its path. It takes in gravel, sediment and whatever man throws away. Besides the gravel, some edible food passes through its gizzard and then into its stomach…
Sturgeons will eat most anything, but like;…..Grass Shrimp, Ghost Shrimp, Mud Shrimp, Gobi's, Bull Heads, Chad Minnows, Anchovies, Sardines, Clams, Sandshrimp, Smelt, Herring, Herring roe, Squid, Pile worms, Lamprey ells, Roll Mop, Mitten Crabs "by choice" and any other scavenger foods that get in its grazing path.
Being a bottom fish with characteristics similar to the Catfish, it has been mistaken for the Giant channel Cat. I stood in amazement once, while this excited fisherman was cleaning this under-sized Sturgeon at the local boat ramp. He was smiling from ear to ear as he described the fight this big Cat fish put up - as he pulled the skin from a 5 lb. white sturgeon that was maybe 30" long.
Some call it technique.....whatever you call it, most fisherpeople have acquired the skill with lots of fishtime under their belts...!
